Ethical and Moral Considerations

Any discussion about best practice for behavior reduction amongst individuals must begin and end with conversation about ethical, moral and social considerations.  Such considerations should always be at the forefront of decision making, analysis and implementation of behavior reduction programs.  The act of balancing these needs against those of behavior reduction should never be considered too lengthy or daunting for the professionals making intervention decisions.   Families are legally entitled to be part of this conversation, as they should be.  A central assessment revolves around the social validity of a program in relation to the behavior it will treat. In an educational setting, for example, considerations of treatment options must take into account students’ legal right to be educated in the least restrictive environment.
